I have had a bit of a break from blogging and Facebook because I think my phone has changed me. I don’t mean I’ve been changed dramatically in the last few months but rather I think over years my phone has changed the way I view myself in relation to other people, and not in a good way.

A friend bought me a book “12 ways your phone is changing you” and I have been glad to read it slowly and thoughtfully over the last few months.

There have been many chapters that I have found particularly challenging. Chapters on loneliness, distraction, seeking approval and judgemental attitudes were especially painful to read. The book is not quite what one might expect and is certainly not an attack on phones or technology in general but what it does do is ask some questions about issues relating to our use of technology (particularly social media) that are worth asking.

I am not unaware of the irony of posting a blog post on the subject but I have been so challenged by the book that encouraging others to read the book made me think that picking up digital pen was worth it.

Read it slowly and honestly and you might find yourself thinking again about what it means to be human.
